Review by Alain Anderton: "Cesar Cui is the least well known of the group known as The Five . "This second quartet is more European than Russian in influence. The first movement is charming, bordering on the saccharin in places, but is well worth playing. The second movement, a Vivace, is by far the least successful of the movements. It is rather uninteresting and repetitive. However, the slow movement is beautiful. It is slightly awkwardly written for the non-professional because it is constantly slipping from 4/4 time to 12/8 time. The last movement, an Allegro non troppo, is fun to play. "Overall, this is not one of the great quartets but is very playable technically and is rewarding musically." Listen to a performance by Steve's Bedroom Band on IMSLP.

Review by Alain Anderton: "This is not one of the great string quartets. However, it is very enjoyable to play and not particularly challenging technically. Of the four movements, the last is probably the weakest musically. Its repeated rhythm begins to grate after a while. The slow movement is delightful and the scherzo has great forward movement. The music does have a very Russian feeling. The Merton Music parts were very clean and clear to read. The edition chosen for reproduction was well laid out. This quartet is well worth playing if you have sated yourself on the main string quartet repertoire."

Customer review by Alain Anderton:"This is a wonderful romantic quartet, typical of Tchaikovsky, though with a fearsome reputation for difficulty, written in 6 flats and enormously challenging for an amateur quartet to get in tune. The first movement starts with a lengthy, searingly beautiful Andante sostenuto, relatively easy to bring off. This goes into a lengthy Allegro Moderato, fast and much of it in 6 flats. The parts are very demanding technically and as an ensemble it is challenging to make something musical of the whole. "The second movement, in B flat, is the easiest of the movements to play, a Tchaikovsky lollipop full of movement and fun, worth playing on its own if you don't want to play the rest. The third movement, a funeral march back in E flat minor should be less technically challenging than the first movement, but is full of double stopping and again very difficult to keep in tune. The finale in B flat major, marked risoluto, is more accessible. "The first and third movements of this quartet are more challenging than anything in Tchaikovsky's first two quartets."The parts were clear but some notes suffered slight loss of definition, having been scanned from old parts. Bar numbers would have been an enormous help because we stopped more frequently than usual."
