Handel, GF - Six Early Trio Sonatas - vol 1 of 2  Ref: 3--010

Edited for two violins (or flute and violin) and cello, with optional harpsichord continuo part which can be used either alongside or instead of the cello.

An intriguing item. The only surviving manuscript in the Royal Music Library in London (not in the composer's hand} states that they were Handel's first three-part compositions, written at the age of ten, before he had received any musical instruction. They have been taken to be for two oboes, but this is doubtful, and Grove is almost certainly right in thinking they were intended for oboe and violin.

Is Grove also right in classifying them as "doubtful or spurious"? If not by Handel, they are by somebody with a melodic inventiveness of a similarly high order. If not by a ten-year-old, they certainly show occasional errors of judgement.

Sometimes flawed, but generally delightful music.
