Fitzwilliam Virginal Book - Arrangements in Six Volumes - Vol. 3  Ref: 4--005 Arranged for string quartet This volume has just two works, both by Byrd, and each taking the form of an extended fantasia on a motif derived from six notes of a major scale. The effect wonderfully transcends this banal material, with Byrd's architectural sense never faltering through all the development, transformation, changes of time signature and mounting levels of excitement. There are some rapid, scurrying scale passages towards the climax of each work, but generally the notes are not difficult. Original keyboard ornaments have been omitted from parts but included in score. see sample score
